Obituary

FRAMINGHAM: Richard J. O’Connell, 87, of Framingham, MA passed away peacefully on March 9, 2020, at Oak Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham. He was the beloved husband of Patricia J. (Shanahan) O’Connell for 61 years.

Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Joseph and Margaret ( Dwyer ) O’Connell. Dick, also known as “Oakie,” attended Framingham schools as well as The Newman School and Brandeis University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and served on the USS John Paul Jones. After being discharged from the Navy, he worked for Jordan Marsh and then Raytheon until he retired in 1996. After that he spent time as a merchandiser for Hudson News Distributor.

He was a proud member of the Barbershop Harmony Society for many years and thoroughly enjoyed singing in competition with the Sounds of Concord chapter. He also served as President of the Northeastern District. He loved soccer and was a Framingham coach for the Framingham United Soccer Club for many years. He especially liked attending sports events that involved his children and grandchildren. Ireland, which held a special place in his heart, was his favorite place to visit, leaving him with many wonderful memories.

Beside his wife, Dick is survived by his children Megan DeVellis and Timothy (Ellen) O’Connell and grandchildren Michael, Kristin, Matthew, Devin, and Daniel. He was predeceased by his three brothers: Joseph, Paul, and Barry.

There will be no visiting hours and the funeral service will be private. Interment will take place at a later time at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue, Bourne, MA 02532. Donations in his name may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverly Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452. Memorial page boylebrothers.com

So very sorry to hear this sad news. Dick was one of the first people to welcome us to the neighborhood and always stopped to say hello. He was so proud of his grandchildren, but always asked after our girls, too, as they grew. And I'm sure on a rainy day or two one of them got a ride in the "grandpa car" to Dunning just across the street, but they liked to keep that quiet because he wasn't much of a stickler for seat belts. The neighborhood will not be the same. Our deepest condolences, Mary Memmott and George Burton

"Mr. O'Connell" was a beloved soccer coach for our sons, Dan and Josh, for many, many years, from the time they first played soccer on town teams until they were graduated from Framingham North High School. What a special, generous, and kind man he was!
You must have many wonderful memories of him as a wife and father and grandfather.
Fondly,
Arlene and Sam Bernstein

My boys affectionately knew Dick as “Mr O”. He was a constant in the neighborhood as they walked to and from Dunning Elementary. He will be missed on Terri Road. Fondly - The Paget Family
