Condolence: Dear Diane,
From the opposite side of the continent, I had not heard from Peter in a while and when he did not reply to my eMail, I searched, hoping not to find this, his obituary. When my Kate went through her 8 hour surgery for cancer in 2005, Peter was the first to send greetings and prayers for her recovery. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and with Peter's extended family and friends.
Requiescat in pace, Peter, you are belovèd of the Lord and will be welcomed in heaven.

Condolence: For some reason, Father Peter was in my thoughts over the last few days. Then, I searched and learned about his passing.

He, along with Fr. Lolio, were the reason that my faith deepened as a young adult while they were assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Bristol; when the Diocese accepted control from the Scallabrini Order after Fr. Michael's passing.

He was an extraordinary priest. Kind, intelligent and a devoted man of his faith. He touched many lives while at OLMC. We lost track of him after he was reassigned out of state. But never from my good memories of him.

Fr. Peter, thank you for your devoted ministry and may you rest in peace.

Condolence: I can't begin to say how much Peter touched my life, both as a mentor and as a friend, and how profoundly sad I am at his passing. His classes at BU are what inspired me to go on to get my doctorate. He literally held us in the palm of his hand as he taught. We had never experienced anything like Peter's teaching before...the depth of his knowledge and his profound faith were an inspiration to us all. I changed my choir rehearsals from Thursday to Monday night just so that I could be with Peter and those who joined him at the pub after class. I remember his beautiful reading voice; he read something in class so beautifully it made my friend cry. I am proud to say that I wear his BU doctoral robe, cap, and hood, and I will think of him every time I wear them. He was so supportive and he always had the answer to any question I had. He is mentioned many times in the footnotes of my book because of this! In addition to his amazing intellect and his unbelievable mastery of words, he also had a fantastic sense of humor. And he was a dear and faithful friend who would always do anything to help someone. I don't really think I can put into words what Peter meant to me, all that he taught me. I will forever treasure the last visits I had with him, singing and chanting hymns that he loved. I will be with you all in spirit tomorrow. I pray that he is looking down and is pleased with his funeral liturgy :-) Thank you, Peter. Well done, good and faithful servant. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Condolence: Diane, my deepest sympathy. Peter was a constant inspiration and teacher to me, to the last. And such a wonderful friend. I remember those happy days in his upstairs chapel as he taught me how to celebrate the Latin Mass, while the Mormon missionaries came calling downstairs. We shall not see his like again.

Condolence: I have known Peter Scagnelli since the fall of 1962 when we both entered the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton MA (now Gordon-Conwell Divinity School). We have been close friends ever since those days. Here is a short bio of my dear friend:

Peter entered the Carmelite Junior Seminary in Hamilton MA in August 1962 and graduated in June 1966. He went to “Fifth Year” at Mount Carmel College in August 1966 and, after a year, entered the Carmelite Novitiate at New Baltimore PA in August 1967. He left the novitiate in March 1968.

He returned home to Framingham and later graduated from the University of Connecticut at Storrs. He put himself through school as “DJ Tom Lyons” on rock-n-roll station WILI-AM in Willimantic CT.

After graduation, he attended St. John’s Seminary in Brighton MA for the diocese of Boston but later switched to the Diocese of Providence. He was ordained in Providence in 1976 by Bishop Louis Gelineau, whom he served as Director of Worship and Liturgy, with residence at the chancery.

After a few years, he was off to St. Anselm College in Manchester NH as a postulant for the Benedictines. He later returned to the diocese of Providence and served a number of parishes. Finally, he returned to Framingham to care for his ailing father while pursuing a Ph.D. at Boston University.

Peter wrote and published hymns, prayers, sourcebooks for parish celebrations, liturgy training publications, homily notes for Sunday sermons and extensive translations from Latin to English. As correctly noted above, he worked for the International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL).

My apologies if I have omitted or incorrectly reported any information.

I miss him dearly. He was a man for all seasons who marched to his own drummer.

May he rest in Peace. Amen.

Condolence: To Father Peter's family,
My husband and I were heartbroken to hear of Fr. Peter's passing. He gave the most beautiful and inspirational homily at our wedding at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Bristol, RI in May of 1984. He always led by example and touched so many lives through his ministry. May you be comforted knowing that you are in our prayers. May the angels guide you to paradise Father Peter. Requiesce in pace.

Condolence: I remember Pete as a classmate in Hamilton, Mass., at the Carmelite Jr. Seminary and at Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, at first Semester of Philosophy at Mount Carmel College. I left in January, 1967, and had some contact with Pete when he was organizing a Class Reunion in the 1980s or 90s. Sad to know he is somewhere else now. He lived a full life. Rest in Peace, Pete.
